Your favorite drink – vs – a Krispy Kreme donut. Which one has more sugar?
I’m sure it comes as no surprise that soda is loaded with sugar. The public has been warned for years that drinking pop can lead to cavities and other health problems. What some people don’t realize is that sodas aren’t the only beverages laden with sugar. Even supposedly “healthy” drinks can contain tablespoons of the stuff.
When looking at the sugar content of different drinks it got me thinking, “How can I show people just how much sugar is in these drinks in a way that will get them to take notice?” And that’s when inspiration hit…
…Donuts! Yes, donuts! Those yummy, sugary treats that make it worth the effort to get out of the bed in the morning.
I thought, “Why not compare the amount of sugar in different beverages to how many donuts you could eat to equal that same amount of sugar.” And that’s just what I set out to do. I went to a convenience store and bought a bunch of popular, readily available drinks. Then I bought 3 dozen Krispy Kreme glazed donuts. The Krispy Kreme donuts contain 10 grams of sugar per donut. Using the nutrition information printed on each beverage container, I noted the sugar content and then stacked up the appropriate amount of donuts in front of each drink. The video below shows the results.
Go ahead, take a look at the video and see if you’re surprised by the results. And next time you reach for a drink, take a minute to look at the sugar content. You just might opt for water instead!
